We often forget to pause for our mental well-being in our bustling lives. We fail to be still and take a break to rejuvenate mentally, which is as vital as resting a weary body. Slowing down our thoughts allows us to be present and attentive. I’ve found that my mind races even amidst a crowd, making it challenging to slow down. Seeking a reprieve, I ventured to Tilghman Island, Maryland, for solitude and reflection.
Upon arrival at Tilghman Island, where the Choptank River and Chesapeake Bay converge, my expectations clashed with reality. Based on vibrant summer photos online, I had chosen the Black Walnut Point Inn, but found myself in a desolate winter landscape, a far cry from the warm imagery that drew me in. The inn, steeped in history from 1847, did little to impress my contemporary tastes. However, the breathtaking vistas of sunrise and sunset, with their tapestry of colors, captivated me and reshaped my perspective.
Here’s what I learned:
Be Still To Engage with Your Surroundings:
Initially, the surrounding splendor overwhelmed me, and I succumbed to the urge to capture every moment through my lens, even braving a snake-filled marsh in search of swans. My intent to slow down was overshadowed by the beauty around me.
Be Still To Focus on the Captivating Details:
I realized the importance of concentrating on specific elements that mesmerize you. For me, it was the daily celestial spectacle of the sunrise and suntset and the contemplative space beneath a towering cross at the island’s tipping point.
Stillness Opens the Door to Wisdom:
Standing still beneath the cross, basking in the sunlight with the river and bay before me, I sensed a divine message relating to my life. The water symbolized my fears, the cross stood for hope and triumph, and the sunlight represented the overpowering force of God’s guidance. In that moment of stillness, I felt chosen to overcome my fears and shine.
This trip taught me that it’s only in tranquility that we can truly listen and align with God’s voice. To all seeking guidance, remember: stillness speaks when we quiet our minds. For those looking to embark on a similar journey, consider stepping away into unfamiliar surroundings to fully embrace the peace needed to listen to the whispers of God.
